Galway are on track to retain the McCarthy Cup after beating Clare by the bare minimum in Semple Stadium Thurles this afternoon after the Banner who trailed by nine points at one stage came close to ending the Tribesmen run in the championship.
The winners made a brighter start and lead by lead by nine points to two after nineteen minutes and when Jonathan Glynn goaled the champions went in at the break leading by 1-9 to 0-6 , Joe Canning increased their lead to seven early in the second half but then Clare began to up their performance by a gear or two when Shane O’Donnell hit their opening goal and then Peter Duggan scored two pointed frees it was a two point ball game.
Niall Burke and Canning responded with a point a each but when Peter Duggan scored Clare’s second goal the lead was cut to a single point after 55 minutes but Clare could never go ahead and shot 19 wides on the day as the ‘Maroon and White’ just got to the winning post and a date in Croke Park with Limerick on All-Ireland final day.
