Leinster SHC: Dublin reach decider

Leinster Senior Hurling Championship

Dublin 2-27 Galway 1-24

By Billy Coss at Pearse Stadium

Chris Crummey and Dónal Burke were the stars of the show as Dublin qualified for their first Leinster final since 2021 and sent 14-man Galway crashing out of the Championship.

The Tribesmen were in ‘must win’ territory coming to Salthill, but finish the round-robin in fourth position, below Wexford by virtue of their head-to-head result with the Slaneysiders in Round Three.

2017 All-Ireland winning captain David Burke’s 18th minute dismissal was a key moment in the game. Backed by a stiff wind blowing from the Árus Bóthar na Trá end, Galway had absorbed the concession of an opening minute Seán Currie goal to move 0-9 to 1-2 in front when it arrived.

Down a man, they were unable to kick on and Dublin struck for their second three-pointer, Burke drilling low to the net in the 32nd minute following great work by Paddy Doyle and Dara Purcell.

Evan Niland struck five points, Conor Cooney three, and Joseph Cooney and Cianan Fahy two apiece in establishing Galway’s 0-19 to 2-11 lead after an incident-packed opening half.

With Crummey and Ronan Hayes sending over quickfire Dublin points and Dara Purcell adding another, Micheál Donoghue’s side hit the front for only the second time in the 39th minute.

Burke was in imperious form on his way to a personal haul of 1-10 and the winners stretched 2-19 to 0-21 clear by the three-quarter mark with Danny Sutcliffe and the influential Darragh Power also hitting wind-assisted scores.

Scores from play dried up for Galway and they relied heavily on Niland placed balls until they received a lifeline when sub Declan McLoughlin fired to the net in the 62nd minute to leave three in it. Henry Shefflin also introduced Cathal Mannion and Johnny Glynn, though the latter was forced off through injury only four minutes later.

On a day when a remarkable 27 different players scored, Dublin refused to be shaken and closed out a memorable win with defenders Paddy Smyth and Conor Donohue were among the late scorers as they advanced to a provincial decider with Kilkenny.

Electric Ireland MHC: Dominant Galway advance

Electric Ireland Minor Hurling Championship Preliminary Quarter-Final

Galway 2-16 Waterford 1-6

By Stephen Barry at FBD Semple Stadium

Goals from Cillian Roche and Brian Callanan saw Galway into next weekend’s All-Ireland minor quarter-finals with a 13-point win over Waterford.

The Déise had the wind in the first half, but made little use of it with a cautious sweeper system. They mustered just two points to trail by six and the Westerners put their foot down from there.

Callanan ended with 1-7 and was fouled for four of his converted frees, while Roche added 1-2.

There were late changes on either side with Rhys O’Connor and Dara Zimmerer introduced for Galway, while Waterford called on Aaron Coughlan.

The Munster side opened the scoring through Jack Power in the third minute, but didn’t register again until first-half stoppage time.

Their best chance in between saw Shane Power wrestle past three defenders but Seán Kelly tipped his shot around the post and Mark Hartley missed the 65.

Galway didn’t produce much more from play, but were able to count on Callanan’s free-taking. He slotted four attempts, two of which he won himself. They had to wait until the 21st minute to score from play through Roche.

It was 0-5 to 0-1 when Déise boss James O’Connor went to his bench, introducing Cormac Spain and Ben Cummins into their attack. The latter set up Hartley to point with his first touch.

But in the fourth added minute, Roche profited from a defensive error, ducked inside three back-tracking defenders, and stitched the sliotar to the far corner. 1-5 to 0-2 at half-time.

Galway jumped 10 ahead by the 37th minute. When a Kelly free was driven in low, Callanan was quickest onto the break and hammered it down the middle. A Roche point made it 2-7 to 0-3.

Waterford went in search of a goal to bring them back into this contest as Spain volleyed over from a quickly-taken free. In the 40th minute, they got it when Hartley’s point attempt dipped under the crossbar and into the net. Two Cummins frees made it a six-point game, 2-9 to 1-6.

But Galway rounded out their victory with the final seven points. Ciarán Leen got them rolling and they turned over Waterford in opposition territory for the next three via fit-again Harry Holmes, Callanan (free), and Jamie Ryan.

Ronan Cahalan was another substitute to score and they could’ve had more goals but Leen and Cahalan shot at Billy Murphy, Leen sent a rebound into the sidenetting, and Holmes’ effort was scrambled away.

Scorers for Galway: Brian Callanan 1-7 (7fs), Cillian Roche 1-2, Ciarán Leen 0-2, Jonah Donnellan (65), Eoghan Mulleady, Jamie Ryan, Ronan Cahalan, and Harry Holmes 0-1 each.

Scorers for Waterford: Mark Hartley 1-1, Ben Cummins 0-3 (3fs), Jack Power, Cormac Spain 0-1 each.

Galway: Seán Kelly; Cathal Maloney, Dara Burke, Gavin Maher; Robert Burke, Jonah Donnellean, Rhys O’Connor; Ronan Murphy, Seán Moran; Eoghan Mulleady, Ciarán Leen, Jamie Ryan; Dara Zimmerer, Brian Callanan, Cillian Roche.

Leinster SHC: Galway finish strongly

Leinster Senior Hurling Championship

Galway 2-25 Antrim 1-14

By David Mohan at Corrigan Park

A red card for Antrim’s Ryan McGarry three minutes into the second half at a sunny Corrigan Park proved the turning point as Galway got back to winning ways in the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship.

At that stage, the Saffrons held a one-point advantage they took into the half and one in which they were full value for, but the numerical disadvantage proved a blow they couldn’t recover from as the Tribesmen put their defeat to Wexford a fortnight ago behind them.

That loss seemed to be hanging over them in Belfast as they failed to fire in the opening half, but then much of that was down to Antrim’s efforts.

Both sides looked jittery from the off but there was a sense Galway were beginning to settle with Conor Cooney, Evan Niland and Conor Whelan all on target as they led 0-4 to 0-2 before they rattled the net on 10 minutes as Seán Linnane played a great ball into the stride of Gavin Lee who buried.

Cooney added a point, but Antrim, who were now settling themselves, began to sense all was not right with the visitors and began to get on top around the middle with Keelan Molloy and James McNaughton finding their range and then Michael Bradley cracking over the equaliser..

Padraic Mannion ended a barren 10 minutes for the Tribesmen, but Antrim were beginning to really fancy it and after McNaughton levelled from a free, they got the goal they deserved 29 minutes in as late replacement Rian McMullan played in Conal Bohill who found the corner of the net.

Galway temporarily came to life with scores from Niland and Whelan – the second after Ryan Elliott had made a vital interception – but Antrim, who were guilty of eight wides and five shots short in thew opening period, extended the gap with Gerard Walsh landing a long free and then clipping over a sideline.

They almost had another goal, as a McNaughton free dropped and Darach Fahy fumbled and was lucky to rescue the ball in the nick of time despite Antrim protests a green flag should have been raised, but late scores through Tom Monaghan and Niland narrowed the gap to one as Antrim led 1-11 to 1-10.

It was all set up for a storming second half, but then came the red card for McGarry for a challenge on Whelan, and Niland pointed the free to level.

Initially, Antrim seemed to shrug it off as Keelan Molloy burst in on goal but was hooked at the vital moment with his subsequent pull back flashing away from danger, but Galway would then grab the lead through Linnane and keep it with Cooney’s goal from a penalty minutes later giving the visitors a little breathing space.

With a man light, Antrim lacked options in attack as Galway gradually pulled away with a decent spread of scorers as Antrim just had three James McNaughton points to show for their efforts.

Galway seemed to be keen on further goals but couldn’t manage it, although Connor Whelan, Daithí Burke and the returning Jonathan Glynn clipped over some fine points with Donal O’Shea having the final word.

Scorers for Galway: C Cooney 1-6 (1-0 pen, 3fs, 0-1 ), E Niland 0-5 (3fs), C Whelan 0-3, G Lee 1-0, S Linnane 0-2, D O’Shea 0-2, David Burke 0-1, Daithí Burke 0-1, P Mannion 0-1, C Fahy 0-1, T Monaghan 0-1, J Cooney 0-1, J Glynn 0-1
