Electric Ireland MHC: Tipp edge out Galway

Electric Ireland MHC Semi-Final

Tipperary 1-24 Galway 0-26

By Billy Coss at TUS Gaelic Grounds

Tipperary’s bid to win a second All-Ireland Minor Hurling Championship in three seasons remained on track, but only after seeing off a heroic performance from 14-man Galway.

Kenneth Burke’s side played more than 50 minutes a man down following the late first half dismissal of defender Rhys O’Connor and battled to hold a two-point lead deep in extra-time.

But Tipperary would show impressive resolve and summoned a driving finish as points from Euan Murray, Killian Cantwell and match winner Cillian Minogue saw James Woodlock’s charges into a final against Kilkenny or Clare.

It was a titanic battle that saw the sides level at 0-12 at half-time, 0-20 to 1-17 at the end of normal time, and again at 0-24 to 1-21 at the interval in extra-time.

Galway appeared to have created vital breathing space when their campaign top scorer Brian Callanan sent over his 15th point, and sixth from play, of a terrific individual performance, but the Premier showed their staying power to edge an enthralling tussle with Minogue’s seventh point of a brilliant display decisive.

Galway ‘keeper Seán Kelly was another of the outstanding performers on view and his series of magnificent stops saved his side on several occasions.

Tipperary held a 0-6 to 0-4 lead after the opening quarter of normal time with inside forwards Stefan Tobin and Minogue extremely sharp.

Callanan, Cillian Roche and Ciarán Leen were Galway’s chief score getters as the young Tribesmen battled back to lead 0-12 to 0-11 lead into the wind.

Then came O’Connor’s straight red card after an off-the-ball incident, and when Eoghan Doughan, who scored eight points, levelled it up, it was a dozen points apiece at the break.

It remained nip-and-tuck through the third quarter before Tipperary looked to have struck a telling blow when the excellent Euan Murray netted the day’s only goal on 50 minutes for a 1-15 to 0-14 advantage to the Munster champions.

Galway refused to die, though, and showed their character to hit six of the game’s closing eight points with Callanan, Jonah Donnellan and sub Ronan Cahalan on target as it finished 0-20 to 1-17 at the end of normal time.

Callanan remained centre-stage in extra-time and his four points were cancelled out by Doughan (two), Minogue and Murray for Tipp as the stalemate continued at the change of ends.

Points from Cahalan and Callanan gave Galway a two-point lead and a strong position, but Tipperary would finish strongest with Minogue emerging the hero, tilting the balance in the 80th minute of an exhilarating contest.

Scorers for Tipperary: Eoghan Doughan 0-8 (6fs, 1 65), Cillian Minogue 0-7, Euan Murray 1-4, Stefan Tobin 0-3, Killian Cantwell and Jake Donelon Houlihan (f) 0-1 each.

Electric Ireland All-Ireland MHC quarter-final: Galway edge out Dublin

Electric Ireland MHC Quarter-Final

Galway 3-18 Dublin 2-18

By Billy Coss at FBD Semple Stadium

Galway’s starting inside line of Brian Callanan, Cillian Roche and Harry Holmes contributed a combined tally of 3-10 in weathering a stern challenge from Dublin in this afternoon’s All-Ireland Minor Hurling Championship quarter-final in Thurles.

The winners never trailed at any stage, but a late first half lead of 10 points was pared down to just the minimum early in the second after a somewhat fortuitous Cathal O’Flynn goal was followed by another after the break from Darragh Kilduff.

Galway finished strongly to prevail when the sides clashed during the Leinster round-robin and they held their nerve in the face of Dublin’s rally with Holmes, making his first start of an injury-interrupted campaign, pouncing for a 40th minute goal that re-established daylight and was the crucial score of an up tempo, entertaining clash.

Dublin refused to go throw in the towel from there to the finish but with Callanan topping up his personal tally to 1-8, Kenneth Burke’s charges held firm in the face of late pressure.

Galway started with intent and had three successive Callanan frees on the board before the full-forward netted their opening goal on six minutes after sharp approach work by Eoghan Mulleady.

Dublin came close to wiping out that major and Galway were indebted to impressive full-back Dara Burke’s crucial intervention. The Boys in Blue soon settled though with Cathal Barrett, Killian Costello, Fiachra Codd and Tom Higgins picking off four of the next five points.

Wing-forward Ciarán Leen struck three terrific efforts of his own as Galway opened a 1-7 to 0-4 advantage by the 16th minute. With defenders Jonah Donnellan and Rhys O’Connor on the mark alongside Roche’s well-finished goal on 23 minutes, the winners’ lead extended into double digits.

From there to the 36th minute, Dublin stormed back. O’Flynn’s dangerous delivery deceived Galway ‘keeper Seán Kelly for a much-needed goal and with Rory Flannery on target from placed balls, the interval scoreline stood at 2-10 to 1-7.

It was quickly whittled down to 2-12 to 2-11 after Dublin restarted in the ascendancy and were breathing down Galway’s necks following further Flannery frees, Codd’s second from play, and a tonic Kilduff goal.

Holmes, a goal scorer in last year’s All-Ireland final defeat to Clare, soon took centre-stage, finishing a brilliant three-pointer and winning a converted Callanan free. The industrious Seán Moran was on target along with Roche and a Donnellan 65 as Galway moved 3-16 to 2-12 clear on 50 minutes.

Martin Barry’s team refused to wilt though and with Flannery bringing his return to eight points and sub Conaill O’Sullivan picking off two, they closed to within a goal but no closer as the Tribesmen weathered late pressure to advance.

Scorers for Galway: Brian Callanan 1-8 (7fs), Harry Holmes 1-1, Cillian Roche 1-1, Ciarán Leen 0-3, Jonah Donnellan 0-2 (1f, 1 65), Jamie Ryan, Rhys O’Connor and Seán Moran 0-1 each.

Scorers for Dublin: Rory Flannery 0-8 (7fs, 1 65), Cathal O’Flynn 1-1, Darragh Kilduff 1-0, Conaill O’Sullivan, Fiachra Codd and Cathal Barrett 0-2 each, Killian Costello, Tom Higgins and Tommy Cullen 0-1 each.

Galway: Seán Kelly; Cathal Maloney (captain), Dara Burke, Gavin Maher; Robert Burke, Jonah Donnellan, Rhys O’Connor; Ronan Murphy, Seán Moran; Jamie Ryan, Eoghan Mulleady, Ciarán Leen; Cillian Roche, Brian Callanan, Harry Holmes.

Subs: Brendan Fox for O’Connor (47), Ronan Cahalan for Ryan (53), Dara Zimmerer for Mulleady (57), Stephen Keane for Roche (60+1).

Dublin: Pádraigh Ryan; Mark Byrne, Shane Dunphy, Rory Duffy; Conor Quinn, Cathal O’Flynn, Tommy Cullen; Fionn Daly, Fiachra Codd; Cathal Barrett, James Norris (captain), Tom Higgins; Darragh Kilduff, Rory Flannery, Killian Costello.

Subs: Evan Ferguson for Codd (43), Conaill O’Sullivan for Daly (46), Eoghan Brennan for Higgins (50), Ben O’Mahony for Barrett (53).

Referee: Conor Daly (Kildare).

Leinster SHC: Dublin reach decider

Leinster Senior Hurling Championship

Dublin 2-27 Galway 1-24

By Billy Coss at Pearse Stadium

Chris Crummey and Dónal Burke were the stars of the show as Dublin qualified for their first Leinster final since 2021 and sent 14-man Galway crashing out of the Championship.

The Tribesmen were in ‘must win’ territory coming to Salthill, but finish the round-robin in fourth position, below Wexford by virtue of their head-to-head result with the Slaneysiders in Round Three.

2017 All-Ireland winning captain David Burke’s 18th minute dismissal was a key moment in the game. Backed by a stiff wind blowing from the Árus Bóthar na Trá end, Galway had absorbed the concession of an opening minute Seán Currie goal to move 0-9 to 1-2 in front when it arrived.

Down a man, they were unable to kick on and Dublin struck for their second three-pointer, Burke drilling low to the net in the 32nd minute following great work by Paddy Doyle and Dara Purcell.

Evan Niland struck five points, Conor Cooney three, and Joseph Cooney and Cianan Fahy two apiece in establishing Galway’s 0-19 to 2-11 lead after an incident-packed opening half.

With Crummey and Ronan Hayes sending over quickfire Dublin points and Dara Purcell adding another, Micheál Donoghue’s side hit the front for only the second time in the 39th minute.

Burke was in imperious form on his way to a personal haul of 1-10 and the winners stretched 2-19 to 0-21 clear by the three-quarter mark with Danny Sutcliffe and the influential Darragh Power also hitting wind-assisted scores.

Scores from play dried up for Galway and they relied heavily on Niland placed balls until they received a lifeline when sub Declan McLoughlin fired to the net in the 62nd minute to leave three in it. Henry Shefflin also introduced Cathal Mannion and Johnny Glynn, though the latter was forced off through injury only four minutes later.

On a day when a remarkable 27 different players scored, Dublin refused to be shaken and closed out a memorable win with defenders Paddy Smyth and Conor Donohue were among the late scorers as they advanced to a provincial decider with Kilkenny.

Scorers for Dublin: Dónal Burke 1-10 (3fs, 2 65s), Chris Crummey 0-4, Darragh Power 0-3, Seán Currie 1-0, Fergal Whiteley, Conor Burke, Brian Hayes, John Bellew, Ronan Hayes, Dara Purcell, Danny Sutcliffe, Paddy Smyth, Conor Donohue and Colin Currie 0-1 each.

Scorers for Galway: Evan Niland 0-8 (5fs, 1 65), Conor Cooney 0-3, Declan McLoughlin 1-0, Joseph Cooney, Tom Monaghan and Cianan Fahy 0-2 each, Gavin Lee, Seán Linnane, Jason Flynn, David Burke, Conor Whelan, Padraic Mannion and Adrian Tuohey 0-1 each.

Dublin: Seán Brennan; John Bellew, Eoghan O’Donnell, Paddy Smyth (captain); Chris Crummey, Conor Donohoe, Paddy Doyle; Brian Hayes, Conor Burke; Danny Sutcliffe, Donal Burke, Sean Currie; Fergal Whitley, Dara Purcell, Ronan Hayes.

Galway: Darach Fahy; Jack Grealish, Daithí Burke, Fintan Burke; Adrian Tuohey, Padraic Mannion, Cianan Fahy; Seán Linnane, David Burke; Joseph Cooney, Conor Whelan (captain), Gavin Lee; Jason Flynn, Conor Cooney, Evan Niland.

Subs: Jonathan Glynn for Flynn (44), Cathal Mannion for Linnane (44), Tom Monaghan for Glynn inj (49), Declan McLoughlin for Joseph Cooney (60), Ronan Glennon for Cianan Fahy (67).

Electric Ireland MHC: Dominant Galway advance

Electric Ireland Minor Hurling Championship Preliminary Quarter-Final

Galway 2-16 Waterford 1-6

By Stephen Barry at FBD Semple Stadium

Goals from Cillian Roche and Brian Callanan saw Galway into next weekend’s All-Ireland minor quarter-finals with a 13-point win over Waterford.

The Déise had the wind in the first half, but made little use of it with a cautious sweeper system. They mustered just two points to trail by six and the Westerners put their foot down from there.

Callanan ended with 1-7 and was fouled for four of his converted frees, while Roche added 1-2.

There were late changes on either side with Rhys O’Connor and Dara Zimmerer introduced for Galway, while Waterford called on Aaron Coughlan.

The Munster side opened the scoring through Jack Power in the third minute, but didn’t register again until first-half stoppage time.

Their best chance in between saw Shane Power wrestle past three defenders but Seán Kelly tipped his shot around the post and Mark Hartley missed the 65.

Galway didn’t produce much more from play, but were able to count on Callanan’s free-taking. He slotted four attempts, two of which he won himself. They had to wait until the 21st minute to score from play through Roche.

It was 0-5 to 0-1 when Déise boss James O’Connor went to his bench, introducing Cormac Spain and Ben Cummins into their attack. The latter set up Hartley to point with his first touch.

But in the fourth added minute, Roche profited from a defensive error, ducked inside three back-tracking defenders, and stitched the sliotar to the far corner. 1-5 to 0-2 at half-time.

Galway jumped 10 ahead by the 37th minute. When a Kelly free was driven in low, Callanan was quickest onto the break and hammered it down the middle. A Roche point made it 2-7 to 0-3.

Waterford went in search of a goal to bring them back into this contest as Spain volleyed over from a quickly-taken free. In the 40th minute, they got it when Hartley’s point attempt dipped under the crossbar and into the net. Two Cummins frees made it a six-point game, 2-9 to 1-6.

But Galway rounded out their victory with the final seven points. Ciarán Leen got them rolling and they turned over Waterford in opposition territory for the next three via fit-again Harry Holmes, Callanan (free), and Jamie Ryan.

Ronan Cahalan was another substitute to score and they could’ve had more goals but Leen and Cahalan shot at Billy Murphy, Leen sent a rebound into the sidenetting, and Holmes’ effort was scrambled away.

Scorers for Galway: Brian Callanan 1-7 (7fs), Cillian Roche 1-2, Ciarán Leen 0-2, Jonah Donnellan (65), Eoghan Mulleady, Jamie Ryan, Ronan Cahalan, and Harry Holmes 0-1 each.

Scorers for Waterford: Mark Hartley 1-1, Ben Cummins 0-3 (3fs), Jack Power, Cormac Spain 0-1 each.

Galway: Seán Kelly; Cathal Maloney, Dara Burke, Gavin Maher; Robert Burke, Jonah Donnellean, Rhys O’Connor; Ronan Murphy, Seán Moran; Eoghan Mulleady, Ciarán Leen, Jamie Ryan; Dara Zimmerer, Brian Callanan, Cillian Roche.

Subs: Brendan Fox for Maher (19, inj), Harry Holmes for Zimmerer (42), Stephen Keane for Mulleady (52), Ronan Cahalan for Ryan (56), Louis Keary for R Burke (58).

Waterford: Billy Murphy; Alex Furlong, Fiacra Cooney, Aaron Coughlan; Conor Power, Joe McDonnell, Ollie Fives; Tommy Kennedy, Rory Jacob; Gearóid O’Shea, Jack Power, Eoin Burke; Mark Hartley, Shane Power, Caoillin Reville.

Subs: Cormac Spain for Reville (30+1), Ben Cummins for O’Shea (30+1), Jamie Shanahan for Burke (46), Pierce Quann for Furlong (52), Thomas Skehan for Hartley (60+2).

Referee: Éamonn Furlong (Wexford).
