All-Ireland SFC: Armagh recover to earn vital draw

All-Ireland SFC Group One

Armagh 1-12 Galway 0-15

By Billy Coss at Markievicz Park

A 74th minute point from Stefan Campbell gave Armagh the priceless draw they needed against Galway to take top spot in Group One, advancing to the quarter-finals of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship.

With victories over Derry and Westmeath in the bank, the sides were battling it out for the most direct route to the last eight. A home preliminary quarter-final awaited the loser, or, in the event of a draw, Galway given their inferior score difference.

That’s exactly what transpired on another afternoon of wildly fluctuating fortunes between the counties that ebbed one way, then the other as the Orchard County reeled in a five-point deficit from the 58th minute on and consigned the Tribesmen to the preliminary quarter-final draw.

Galway held a perfect record in the fixture after their exhilarating quarter-final penalty shootout victory in 2022, but Armagh struck back to edge last year’s clash at the death in Carrick-on-Shannon. They were level 12 times over the course of that absorbing contest 12 months ago and they traded on parity on eight more occasions in front of 8,870 in Sligo this time around.

Four times Armagh kicked go-ahead scores in the first half only for Galway to respond and equalise before Padraic Joyce’s side hit a purple patch with four on spin from the 30th minute to the break to lead 0-8 to 0-6.

Shorn of hamstring victim Damien Comer, Galway welcomed back captain Seán Kelly and Rob Finnerty to their starting XV and it was Finnerty who accounted for half of that tally with four points (three frees). Shane Walsh landed two and one apiece came from Paul Conroy and Cillian McDaid.

Tiernan Kelly, Andrew Murnin, Ben Crealey, Rian O’Neill and Conor Turbitt (two) were on target for the Orchard County.

Galway stole a march in the third quarter and forged a 0-13 to 0-8 in front following efforts from Walsh (free), John Maher, Paul Conroy, Dylan McHugh and Liam Silke.

Rian O’Neill and Andrew Murnin came up with Armagh’s sole responses in that spell as their rising wide count would hit double figures by the finish.

The deficit to four was trimmed to four when the game’s hinge moment arrived in the 59th minute as Turbitt picked off a loose Connor Gleeson restart and set up Tiernan Kelly to finish clinically from close range.

Buoyed by that score, Armagh retained the momentum with O’Neill grabbing his third and Turbitt his fourth to move Armagh 1-11 to 0-13 in front on 62 minutes.

In another tense endgame between the counties, Galway grabbed back the initiative with back-to-back Walsh frees to put one foot in the quarter-finals.

Crucially, their conversion rate nose-dived late on and Armagh conjured up the score they sought with Campbell latching onto the end of a fine move down the left flank to punch the all-important leveller.

Scorers for Armagh: Conor Turbitt 0-4 (1f), Tiernan Kelly 1-1, Rian O’Neill 0-3, Andrew Murnin 0-2, Ben Crealey and Stefan Campbell 0-1 each.

Scorers for Galway: Shane Walsh 0-5 (3fs), Rob Finnerty 0-3 (2fs), Paul Conroy 0-2, Matthew Tierney, Cillian McDaid, John Maher, Dylan McHugh and Liam Silke 0-1 each.

All-Ireland SFC: Galway battle past Westmeath

All-Ireland SFC Group 1

GALWAY 1-12 WESTMEATH 0-11

By Gerry Buckley at TEG Cusack Park

A wholehearted Westmeath side got caught by a sucker punch goal from Shane Walsh in the 67th minute and were unfortunate to lose by a four-point margin against an under-strength Galway side in ideal conditions for football in Mullingar.

Galway, who had the aid of a slight wind, almost got off to a dream start when a strong run from the throw-in by Matthew Tierney teed up Cein Darcy for a goal chance, but Jason Daly pulled off a terrific save at the expense of a ‘45’ which Connor Gleeson converted. Sam McCartan, a grandson of Galway legend Sean Purcell, equalised in fine style and Dessie Dolan’s charges took the lead in the seventh minute courtesy of a fisted effort by Robbie Forde.

All Star nominee Ronan O’Toole was black-carded in the tenth minute, and the visitors scored two points during that ten-minute spell via Darcy and a Walsh free. Point exchanges ensued between David Lynch (after a great piece of fielding) and Walsh (a free), and John Heslin (a free) and Walsh (a great score from play).

Another Heslin free and a great point from Ray Connellan tied the scoring at 0-6 apiece with a half an hour elapsed. Cillian McDaid nudged Padraic Joyce’s troops ahead, but the Lake County men finished the half strongly with points from Heslin (a free, after the impressive Ronan Wallace was pushed close to the parallelogram) and Wallace himself (in the last action of the half). Westmeath, who had shot no wides to Galway’s five, led by 0-8 to 0-7 at the interval.

Heslin doubled Westmeath’s lead with a converted free in the 39th minute. Gleeson then missed two long-range placed balls at the other end – a ’45’ and a free from slightly further out – but the Tribesmen eventually drew level with a point apiece from Gleeson (from a ’45’) and a free by Walsh (the award seemed soft). Tierney opened his account in the 62nd minute, but Westmeath equalised via Wallace within a minute.

The game was very much up for grabs until a misplaced pass by Connellan allowed Walsh to run almost half the length of the pitch and the Kilmacud Crokes man fired an unstoppable shot to the roof of the net. Heslin narrowed the gap with a free, but Galway saw out a very hard-earned win with late insurance points from Tierney and blood sub Kieran Molloy.

Scorers for Galway: S Walsh 1-4 (three frees), M Tierney, C Gleeson (two ’45’s) 0-2 each, C Darcy, C Hernon, C McDaid, K Molloy 0-1 each.

Scorers for Westmeath: J Heslin 0-5 (five frees), R Wallace 0-2, S McCartan, D Lynch, R Connellan, R Forde 0-1 each.

All-Ireland SFC: Gritty Galway prevail

All-Ireland SFC Group One

Galway 2-14 Derry 0-15

By Billy Coss at Pearse Stadium

Second half goals from Seán Kelly and Céin D’Arcy were the key scores as Galway made a winning start to Group One of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship against 14-man Derry in Salthill this evening.

Already minus Padraig McGrogan due his recent cruciate ligament injury, Derry also started with two more key defenders in Conor Doherty and Eoin McEvoy. Their chances suffered a further hammer blow on 21 minutes when All-Star centre half-back Gareth McKinless received a straight red card.

The recently crowned three in-a-row Connacht champions led for the bulk of contest and turned around armed with an 0-8 to 0-6 interval advantage. Top scorer Rob Finnerty kicked three points and man of the match Paul Conroy two as Derry were left to rue several chances that drifted wide or dropped short.

Though Mickey Harte’s side briefly drew level early in the second half after Conor Glass and Lachlan Murray efforts, Kelly’s 42nd minute finish at the second time of asking created scoreboard separation that the winners would protect to the finish. John Daly, Shane Walsh, Liam Ó Conghaile and Conroy also landed important second half points.

Derry battled valiantly while a man light and a fruitful mini-spell brought two more for Murray either side of a Brendan Rogers point that moved them to within three.

In the 63rd minute Galway ‘keeper Connor Gleeson saved Shane McGuigan’s powerful, but centrally struck shot before play swung to the Árus Bóthar na Trá end and Daniel O’Flaherty and D’Arcy worked the match-sealing goal palmed home by D’Arcy.

Galway travel to Westmeath next, while Derry host Armagh.
