Connacht SFC: Galway cruise to emphatic victory

Connacht Senior Football Championship

Galway 5-21 London 0-9

By Billy Coss at McGovern Park, Ruislip

Forty years have passed since Galway last completed a Connacht Senior Football Championship three in-a-row, and what the current team hope is their first step towards matching that feat in 2024 came with a clinical win over London.

The Exiles gave Galway the fight of their lives on their last trip to Ruislip in 2019, but there was never any threat of a repeat scare as Padraic Joyce’s side ran out emphatic 27-point winners.

Championship debuts were handed to Cillian Ó Curraoin and Liam Ó Conghaile, while captain Seán Kelly and Liam Silke both got valuable minutes under their belts.

Galway’s two most seasoned campaigners shone brightest on the day with Johnny Heaney kicking four terrific points from play before being withdrawn and Paul Conroy going the full 70 and capping his superb performance with 1-3.

Conroy’s midfield partner Céin D’Arcy helped himself to 1-2, while sub Tomo Culhane bagged a pair of quickfire goals before injury forced him to depart as Galway finished with 14 men having used up their full complement of replacements. Like Heaney, Rob Finnerty and Ó Curraoin were also on the scoresheet four times.

It was 0-7 to 0-3 in Galway’s favour after 22 minutes with London’s points coming from Daniel Clarke, Shay Rafter and Liam Gallagher (free). The winners put the hammer down from there to half-time, adding a further 1-8 without reply to move out of sight after playing with the aid of a significant wind.

Heaney was the standout player in the half and it was a measure of Galway’s front foot dominance that their half-back line trio of Dylan McHugh, John Daly and Liam Silke all scored before the break.

Nine different players chipped in for Galway’s 1-15 to 0-3 interval lead and their opening goal in the 32nd minute was set in train by a Seán Kelly interception and finished off by Cathal Sweeney.

It continued to be one-way traffic for much of the second half and though London stemmed the bleeding a little after the restart, the Tribesmen soon piled on the goals with four arriving in a blistering six-minute spell through Culhane (two), Conroy and D’Arcy.

To London’s credit, they stuck at it and kicked four of the game’s closing points with Gallagher (two frees), Ciarán Diver and Ruairí Rafferty all on target.

Galway move on to a provincial semi-final against Sligo or Leitrim in a fortnight, while London turn their focus to the Tailteann Cup.

Scorers for Galway: Tomo Culhane 2-0, Paul Conroy 1-3, Céin D’Arcy 1-2, Cathal Sweeney 1-1, Johnnny Heaney, Cillian Ó Curraoin (3fs) and Rob Finnerty (1m, 1f) 0-4 each, Dylan McHugh, John Daly and Liam Silke 0-1 each.

Allianz FL D1: Galway secure vital victory

Allianz Football League Division One

Galway 3-12 Monaghan 0-14

By Colm Shalvey at St Tiernach’s Park

Galway gave their hopes of staying in Division One of the Allianz NFL a significant boost with a win over Monaghan in Clones.

The return of some of Monaghan’s veterans wasn’t enough to inspire a bounce back to winning ways for the hosts, who remain bottom of the table after a disastrous finish to the first half.

Galway pounced for three goals during that spell, with Cathal Sweeney, Rory Cunningham and John Maher all profiting from defensive errors to put the visitors in the driving seat. They were always able to keep Monaghan at arm’s length from there on as they secured a win that sees them jump out of the relegation zone with two rounds remaining.

The teams shared just two points each in the first ten minutes, with Dessie Ward’s opener for Monaghan being answered by a Rob Finnerty free. As the game belatedly came to life, points from Rory Cunningham and Finnerty for Galway were cancelled out by Jack McCarron and the lively Michael Hamill. McCarron regained the lead for Monaghan on 25 minutes, but things unravelled for the home side in the remainder of the first half.

The initial dagger arrived when Monaghan failed to deal with a hopeful punt forward from Dylan McHugh, allowing Cathal Sweeney to hit the net. Another followed within five minutes, as Cunningham reacted quickest when a Finnerty free came back off the woodwork to fire home a second goal, moments after Andrew Woods had been black-carded.

Monaghan responded through McCarron, Mícheál Bannigan and Hamill, only to have all that work undone deep into added time when they couldn’t clear a sideline from Finnerty, allowing John Maher to scramble home a third major for Galway, who led by 3-4 to 0-7 at the break.

Despite managing third-quarter points from Bannigan, Ward and returning sub Conor McCarthy, Monaghan were never able to significantly eat into their deficit, with Galway able to reply via John Daly, Cunningham and Cillian Ó Curraoin.

Conor McManus marked his first appearance of the season with a late point from a free, but Ó Curraoin ended his half-hour’s work with 0-5 to his name – four from frees and one from a forward mark – as the Tribesmen stayed well clear, with Seán Kelly capping their win with a great score late on.

Galway host an in-form Dublin side in round six, while Monaghan face an Ulster derby away to Tyrone.

Allianz FL D1: Gritty Galway defeat Tyrone

Allianz Football League Division One

Galway 1-10 Tyrone 0-12

By Francis Mooney at O’Neill’s Healy Park

Galway’s first win of the season provided a huge lift as they held on to edge out Tyrone by a single point at O’Neills Healy Park.

Cathal Sweeney’s second half goal the key score for the Tribesmen as they finally found the winning touch in what they hope will be a major turning point.

The return of Sean Kelly was a major boost, but an injury to Paul Conroy is causing some concern to manager Padraig Joyce as they prepare to take on table-toppers Derry next weekend.

The ball stuck like glue to Rob Finnerty’s hands as he fetched cleanly to fire over three early points, with Paul Conroy hitting the target from distance in a positive opening for the Tribesmen.

They swarmed forward, invited to do so by a deep-lying Tyrone defensive set-up, moving into a 0-4 to 0-2 lead by the 15th minute.

Recycling possession in search of a spare man or a yard of space, Padraic Joyce’s men stretched their opponents, but lost their way in the second quarter, when the scores alarmingly dried up.

The Red Hands were happy to hit their opponents on the breakaway, with goalkeeper Niall Morgan pressing forward to pick out Ciaran Daly for a mark, and Darragh Canavan on target from a free in that opening 15 minute spell.

But they went 16 minutes without a score, before Peter Harte curled over a delightful score, followed by a Morgan effort from play.

Darragh Canavan danced through for his first score of the afternoon, their third in as many minutes, to put his side in front for the first time just before the half-hour mark.

And there was a goal chance as well for a home side that was beginning to find holes in a nervous Galway defence. Conn Kilpatrick galloped through to get his shot away, but was denied by Connor Gleeson as the Red Hands stepped up the pressure, with Morgan’s press from deep a huge element in their offensive set-up.

And they found a way to frustrate Galway, with Ciaran Daly forcing a couple of turnovers and intercepts from Aodhan Donaghy and Peter Harte, the latter preventing a goal chance as he got a hand to Johnny McGrath’s pass.

Galway, having lost their way, failed to score for the closing 24 minutes of the half, and a Morgan free sent the home side in with a 0-6 to 0-4 lead.

A further blow for Galway saw influential midfielder Conroy fail to show for the second half, his leg heavily strapped and a major worry for manager Joyce.

But they started with a flourish, Matthew Tierney flashing over a point after just 15 seconds, and a breakaway Johnny Heaney point brought the sides level.

But place-kicking presented a problem for the Connacht men, with Finnerty and Tierney both missing the target with scoreable efforts, while at the other end, Canavan edged the Red Hands back in front.

Sean Kelly came off the bench for his first appearance of the season, with instant impact, as moments later he was involved in the move that saw Rory Cunningham send Cathal Sweeney in to crack home a 49th minute goal.

Now they committed all 15 men to the resistance cause as they defended a slender lead, but remained dangerous on the breakaway, adding points through Heaney and Daniel O’Flaherty, while Sweeney was denied a second goal by Morgan’s brilliant save.

Johnny McGrath finished off a slick move with a point to put three between the sides with five minutes to play, and from then on it was all about game management.

Scorers for Galway: R Finnerty 0-4, (1f, 1m), C Sweeney 1-0, J Heaney 0-2, M Tierney, J McGrath, D O’Flaherty, P Conroy 0-1 each.

Scorers for Tyrone: D Canavan (1f) and C Daly (1m) 0-3 each , N Morgan 0-2 (1f), M McKernan, P Harte, C Devlin, C Kilpatrick (m) 0-1 each.

Allianz FL D1: Spoils divided at Dr Hyde Park

Allianz Football League Division One

Roscommon 0-9 Galway 0-9

By Ian Cooney at Dr Hyde Park

Roscommon and Galway had to settle for a share of the spoils at a windswept Dr. Hyde Park.

Neither side made full use of the elements in their favour and a draw was probably a fair result to give both sides their first league points of the season.

Donie Smith saw red for Roscommon after an altercation with Paul Conroy with nine minutes remaining, but Galway substitute, Jack McCabe, was shown a black card soon afterwards by referee Conor Lane to ensure that both teams finished the game with 14 players.

For the bulk of the opening 35 minutes, Galway coped admirably against the strong wind that was blowing straight down the field towards the Graveyard end of the Hyde, and their strong running threatened to open up the home side on a few occasions.

With John Maher and the excellent Paul Conroy laying a platform at midfield, the Tribesmen opened the scoring through a Robert Finnerty free after Cathal Sweeney flashed a goal chance wide.

Conor Cox, who was introduced for the injured Ciarán Lennon inside the first 10 minutes, opened Roscommon’s account but Cillian Ó Curraoin finished off a good move with the game’s first point from play to edge his side in front once more.

Cox restored parity from a 17th minute free before a long-range effort from Daire Cregg nudged Roscommon ahead for the first time.

A beautifully-struck free off the ground from Matthew Tierney into the teeth of the breeze restored parity in the 22nd minute. Then Ruaidhrí Fallon and Ó Curraoin (free) swapped scores to leave it 0-4 apiece after 28 minutes.

The introduction of Brian Stack coincided with Roscommon finally gaining some traction with a hat-trick of points from Cox, including his first of the afternoon from play, to leave his side 0-7 to 0-4 in front at half time.

But the advantage was precarious, given the strength of the breeze.

Galway never managed to get ahead in the second half as Roscommon’s resilience, epitomised by Eoin McCormack and Ben O’Carroll, kept them alive.

Early frees from Finnerty and Ó Curraoin suggested that it wouldn’t take Galway long to reel in their opponents, but Roscommon’s workrate all over the pitch improved and points from O’Carroll and Diarmuid Murtagh (free) restored their three-point advantage by the three-quarter stage.

But Galway kept chipping away with points from play by Kieran Molloy and Matthew Tierney, leaving the bare minimum between them before Paul Conroy brought the teams level from a free with seven minutes remaining.

Smith saw red, but Galway were soon down to 14 men when McCabe was shown a black card moments after his introduction.

Both sides eyed up a winner but Keith Doyle was off target for the hosts, while Liam Ó Conghaile and Kieran Molloy missed chances for Galway.

In the end, both managers, Davy Burke and Pádraic Joyce, had to settle for a draw alongside plenty of food for thought ahead of the next round in two weeks’ time.

Scorers for Roscommon: Conor Cox 0-5 (4fs), Daire Cregg 0-1, Ruaidhrí Fallon 0-1, Ben O’Carroll 0-1, Diarmuid Murtagh 0-1 (0-1f).

Scorers for Galway: Cillian Ó Curraoin 0-3 (2fs), Robert Finnerty 0-2 (2fs), Matthew Tierney 0-2 (1f), Kieran Molloy 0-1, Paul Conroy 0-1 (f).

Roscommon: Conor Carroll; David Murray, Niall Higgins, Robbie Dolan; Niall Daly, Ruaidhrí Fallon, Eoin McCormack; Enda Smith, Dylan Ruane; Cian Connolly, Donie Smith, Daire Cregg; Diarmuid Murtagh, Ciarán Lennon, Ben O’Carroll.

Subs: Conor Cox for Lennon 9, Brian Stack for Connolly 29, Keith Doyle for Ruane 43, James Fitzpatrick for Cregg 64, Evan Flynn for Dolan 70, Andrew Glennon for Murtagh 70.

Galway: Connor Gleeson; Johnny McGrath, Seán Fitzgerald, Eoghan Kelly; Dylan McHugh, John Daly, Seán Mulkerrin; Paul Conroy, John Maher; Kieran Molloy, Matthew Tierney, Cathal Sweeney; Liam Ó Conghaile, Robert Finnerty, Cillian Ó Curraoin.

Subs: Johnny Heaney for Kelly 38, Céin Darcy for Ó Curraoin 55, Jack McCabe for Finnerty 61, Patrick Egan for Mulkerrin 70.

Referee: Conor Lane (Cork).
