Liam Mellows are through to their first Galway Senior Hurling Championship Final since 1970 after edging out Cappataggle by 0-13 to 1-9 at Kenny Park Athenry in the semi-final.
The winners had to withstand a strong second half fightback by Cappataggle after taking a 0-7 to 0-3 lead into the break.
A goal by Jarlath Mannion brought his side back into the game and going into added time ‘Mellows were battling hard to stay ahead. Tadhg Haran was on target from frees and his side was a point ahead when, with almost the last puck, Cappatagle missed a great opportunity from a ’65 to earn a draw.
Cillian McDaid one of Galway's best dual underage players in recent years is off to Australia and set to become the Carlton Blues' latest Irish recruit.
The Monivea/Abbey youngster, who scored 1-1 from wing back in the Tribesmen's All-Ireland Under 21 Football Final defeat to Dublin earlier this year, will fly out to Melbourne to sign a two-year international rookie contract with the Aussie Rules club.
Cillian, who won an All-Ireland minor hurling medal in 2015, will join Louth's Ciaran Byrne at the Melbourne club.
